Abstract:
IIn next-generation wireless communication systems, there is a growing demand for flexible and high-performance antenna design within limited spatial constraints. To address this, we propose a novel antenna design method based on Spherical Mode Expansion (SME). SME enables theoretical derivation of ideal radiation patterns independent of antenna placement and structure by expanding antenna characteristics using spherical wave functions. In our method, the desired beam pattern is analytically derived from the angular power distribution using SME, from which the far-field pattern and corresponding current distribution coefficients are calculated. A physically realizable antenna is then designed based on these coefficients. By focusing on dominant mode components, the method approximates the ideal pattern with fewer antenna elements. This eliminates the need for iterative tuning based on placement, enabling efficient and accurate design. The proposed method significantly enhances design flexibility and holds promise as a key technology for future high-efficiency wireless systems.
